Strategy games are a genre of game where the player control vast battalions, cities, animals – if you are running a farm, cities or nations, which are represented by a piece your can move on a board if you are playing chess or an icon you can move on a screen if you are playing a game. They are typically played by the more thoughtful of gamers who choose games where maybe graphics and quick thrill come second to technique, tactics and strategy. They are truly the thinking man’s games.
The inter-war 20th century is brought to life in this game by Polish developer Jakup Rozalski. It mingles alternative history and strategy with the aim of increasing the agricultural and industrial output of your chosen country while also developing a powerful defence system against the tide of threats that threatened to overwhelm weaker countries after WW1. In a nod to ancient Chinese history the game will feature three kingdoms competing during times of peace and warring during times of war. The Kingdoms in the game are: The Polania Republic, The Saxony Empire and Rusviet – working out which actual countries they represent shouldn’t be too tricky. Each of these imagined kingdoms have their own aims and objectives which your job is to safeguard. Meanwhile you must delelop new machines and weapons to defend your country from attack. The game is due for release in 2017 or 18.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
This is another historical epic, but this time the plot is that you are a good Shogun – a commander – trying to enforce an era of peace by eliminating your dangerous enemies in the Japan of 1615. As a leader you do not play the role of assassin instead employing your personal Samurai to deal with plots and threats. To assist you will have a series of maps and an overhead view to help you track down and destroy the poltters. Each of the characters has his/her own character but each share similiar skills in stealth and the secret art of remaining undetected. The game is due for release in December 2016.
In this game you play the role of the owner of a construction manager and real estate developer whose aim is to buy, muscle, bribe, and bully your way right to the top – remind you of anyone? The game is an re-make of a 1997 classic and to mark it’s 30th annicersary the re-make will be released next year. Build your housing empire from the 31st of January next year.
